Yesss! NaNoWriMo, we’re done. We did it. 52,791 words of novel-y goodness written all this month. Yea!

It’s almost over. National Novel Writing Month. Did you do it? Think about it at least? For years I’ve thought about it. Watched a friend try and succeed each November.

And this year…. it’s almost over. 6 more days.

Goal: 50,000 words.

I’m just under 43,000.

It’s going to happen.

I’ve put off even writing this post until now for a reason. I’ve been too busy confronting all the doubts that go with a big undertaking. Why is it that until a certain point in every book – at LEAST 150 pages in, I still very much doubt I’ll ever finish writing it? Doubt doesn’t just creep in and whisper, “you’ll never finish, Kelsey. It stinks. Every word. Or at least, every third word… really…. stinks….” My brand of Doubt yells. And it keeps yelling. Until the pages stack up so high that it’s impossible for me to take it seriously any longer.

I wonder if that point in time – the point at which Doubt shuts up – is negotiable. If I thought it would change once I’d written a book or two – or published a book or two… well. No. It didn’t. It’s as loud and persistent as ever, and every bit as convincing.

At least this month – November – crazy month for all nanowrimoers – the pages stack up extra fast and that point of Doubt stopping all its yelling… comes that much faster.

The other day I was thinking aloud about something. Can’t remember what, but it was a small problem. How to arrange the afternoon schedule, or what to make for dinner. No idea what the specifics were, but Ethan-7yr listened for a minute and then said, “Mom. Don’t worry. All stories have a beginning, middle, and end.” He put his hand on my arm and said, “This is just the middle.”

Walking in High Heels 101

If you have any tips on how to walk in high heels, would you leave it in a comment here? I don’t have a problem with them myself, but I can’t figure out how to describe it to someone who does, and I’m writing a scene that needs just such a conversation. (you’re writing whaa? who writes stuff like that?! yeah. that’d be me.)

Soooo, how would you tell someone how to walk in heels?

A New Reader

My heart has swelled with pride over a new literary conversion. Ethan, my 7 yr old, has morphed into a full fledged, passionate, devoted ALL THE TIME reader. His nose is suddenly not visible to the rest of the family, as it is always in a book. “CHAPTER books,” as he will proudly tell anyone who manages to capture his attention away from the latest Mary Pope Osbourne tale.

Oooh, it’s sweet thing to see!

On a Writing High

Last night I had a fantastically productive writing session. Feet propped up on a footstool, laptop on lap, The Next Iron Chef on in the background, and voila! Ten pages. Ten pages is always about as much as I can ever write in one sitting, so I was thrilled.

Now. I just need to do it again today.

And tomorrow.

A friend and I were at a grocery store tonight, and as we walked down the aisle we saw rows and rows of olive oil. Doesn’t it seem odd that there are levels of virginity for olive oil?

There’s olive oil, virgin olive oil, and extra virgin olive oil. There might be others, I don’t know. If you know your olives, and your oils, and your cooking, well – it might not be odd at all to you.

And if you don’t know anything about any of those things, you might really get the giggles in Wal Mart.
